It is a yellow birch base and root structure that was growing on the root of another much larger yellow birch tree.  the root mass at the base actually forms around a small opening that looks like a comfortable domicile for small mammal (an ermine). I thought it fitting to add the ermine after I found it in the road just down from our house.  I had nothing to do with the ermine's demise. It had just been hit and was in no way damaged. I had the animal preserved at a taxidermy shop in Pennsylvania and then mounted on the pedestal. The Wood base is walnut as is the top and the apron is bent tiger maple banded with walnut that matches the top and base.  The top is finished with twelve coats of sprayed on high quality musical instrument laquear. IT is then sanded with 10 progressively finer grits of very fine emery cloth to give it a glass-like finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is truly a one-of-a-kind table that can never be duplicated.  The table measures 29\" high and the top oval is 28\" long 21 1\/2\" wide.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e* An ermine is a short-tailed weasel. They are brown during the summer months and then change to pure white during the winter.
