These Shaker divided carriers are made with locally harvested Adirondack cherry. They are made using the same techniques and materials as the 19th century Shakers at Watervliet, NY and New Lebanon, NY, with the exception of cherry plywood used for the bottom. The Shakers would have used white pine, much lighter in color, but plywood was not yet an option for them. Cherry plywood is more stable than solid wood and more pleasing aesthetically. The carrier is held together with small maple pegs (square pegged into a round hole) and copper tacks are used to hold the knife-beveled "swallow-tail" fingers in place. These carriers are approximately 13" long and 9" across; the handle at its highest point is about 4½" high. The handle divides the carrier in half, and one section is further divided by a smaller separator. Finished with several coats of oil rubbed on by hand. A great way to organize kitchen items or a beautiful sewing or embroidery basket, this Shaker Carrier will add a touch of classic Shaker simplicity to your home. Each carrier or box is individually signed, dated and numbered.
